CCAD Towing and Roadside Help Around Cleveland Avenue

For students, families and visitors at Columbus College of Art & Design: dead batteries, locked keys, overloaded cars and tows near the Discovery District.

Call (740) 812-9489

CCAD towing calls tend to be personal: a student whose car was packed with a semester of artwork, a parent on move-in day, a visitor who parked for a campus tour. Columbus College of Art & Design sits at the corner of East Broad Street and Cleveland Avenue in the Discovery District, beside the Columbus Museum of Art, with around 900 students according to federal College Navigator data. The campus is compact, with lots scattered across a few blocks between Cleveland Avenue, Grant Avenue and Ninth Street, so knowing which lot you are in is half the battle when you call for help. This page explains the campus layout, the calls we see from art students and families, and how pricing works. We are independent from the college and the museum, and nothing here suggests otherwise.

Campus layout and parking lots

CCAD's main address is 60 Cleveland Avenue, the Joseph V. Canzani Center, which houses administration and the library. Design Studios on Broad is at 390 East Broad Street; Kinney Hall and the Center for Creative Collaboration, home to the woodshop, metal shop and fabrication labs, sit on East Gay Street. Housing includes Design Square Apartments on Cleveland Avenue and Schottenstein Residence Hall on North Ninth Street.

The college describes its parking as designated campus lots plus nearby garages, all within walking distance. It lists lots by intersection, which is exactly how you should describe your location to us.

  • Cleveland Avenue at East Broad, East Gay or East Long Street
  • North Grant Avenue at East Gay or East Long Street
  • North Ninth Street at East Gay Street
  • North Washington Avenue at East Long Street
  • Admissions guests: marked spaces at the north end of Design Studios on Broad, entered from Cleveland Avenue near East Gay

Hauling big projects and the cars that carry them

Art students move large, heavy things: canvases, sculptures, portfolio cases, lumber from the shop, and occasionally a whole studio at the end of the year. A small car loaded past its limits works harder on its tires and suspension, and a flat or a blowout often shows up on the short drive from Gay Street to home. We can put your spare on with a tire change, and if the car should not be driven, a flatbed tow keeps all four wheels off the road.

One practical note: we tow the vehicle, not its contents, so plan how to move a fragile piece if the car has to go on a truck. Ask a classmate to hold it, or leave it safely in the studio until the car is fixed. When you call, tell dispatch the car is loaded so the driver knows what to expect.

Late studio nights, dead batteries and lockouts

Studio work runs late, and a car that sat on a surface lot all day is more likely to fail at midnight than at noon. A jump start is $75 flat plus en-route at $4 per mile from our yard, with a battery test and printed report included, and we can install a new battery if it fails the test. Keys locked in with a sketchbook on the seat? Lockout service runs the same price.

Our rate card adds $150 between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. and $50 on weekends, so a Tuesday afternoon call costs less than a Saturday midnight one. Most metro calls are reached in 20 to 40 minutes, though traffic and weather can stretch that window. If you know you will be leaving late, park near a lit building such as Kinney Hall.

Move-in, move-out and visitors

Families driving in for move-in or a campus visit may be unfamiliar with downtown, and an out-of-town car that overheats or loses a tire near Cleveland Avenue needs a clear location. Give the lot intersection from the list above and a nearby building name. If the car will not make the trip home, we can tow it to a repair shop in town, or arrange long-distance towing back to your home city. If a car disappears from a posted street during a busy weekend, our impound lot guide explains how to find and retrieve it. Out-of-state drivers should keep the registration and insurance card in the glove box, since both matter if the car is towed or needs a lockout.

CCAD: common questions

Frequently asked questions

Do you provide CCAD towing and roadside help near campus?

We do, and we respond to drivers parked in and around the CCAD campus near East Broad Street and Cleveland Avenue, day or night. We are an independent company, not part of the college. Call (740) 812-9489, name the lot by its intersection, and describe the car. Expect a typical metro window of 20 to 40 minutes, which is an estimate.

Which CCAD lot should I tell the dispatcher?

CCAD identifies its lots by intersection, so use that. For example, say Cleveland Avenue and East Long Street, or North Ninth Street and East Gay Street. Add the nearest building, such as Kinney Hall or Design Studios on Broad, and your car's color and plate. That combination lets the technician walk straight to you.

Can you tow my car if it is full of artwork?

We can tow the car, but we cannot take responsibility for moving the contents. Before the car is loaded, remove fragile or valuable pieces and leave them with someone you trust or in your studio. Tell dispatch the car is packed so the driver can plan. A flatbed tow keeps the vehicle level and all four wheels off the road.

How much is a lockout or jump start at CCAD?

Each is a flat $75 plus a $4-per-mile en-route charge. Late-night work from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. adds $150, and Saturdays or Sundays add $50. A jump includes a battery test with a printed report. If the battery fails, we can replace it right in the lot at the battery cost plus the service call.

Is CCAD near a highway if I break down on the way?

The campus is on the east side of downtown near I-670 and I-71, so many visitors come in on those roads. If you break down on an interstate, get to the shoulder, turn on hazards and call 911 if you are in danger. Then call us with the direction and nearest exit. Highway calls add $75.

Our family car broke down on move-in day. Can you get it home?

We can. Our driver can take it to a repair shop in Columbus so you can pick it up later, or arrange a long-distance tow back to your home city. Local tows are $4 a mile en-route, a $125 hook-up and $7 per loaded mile. A long trip uses the same per-mile rate, so dispatch can give you the total before we load the car.
