Merion Village is named for the Merion family, who settled near South High and Moler Streets in 1809. Its civic association draws the neighborhood from the Scioto River east to Parsons Avenue, and from Greenlawn Avenue, Thurman Avenue and Whittier Street south to Frank Road (SR-104). Most houses date from around the turn of the twentieth century, and the 1894 tower of Southwood Elementary still rises over South Fourth Street. Typical calls here are cars that die at the curb, flats on South High Street, keys locked inside and breakdowns on I-71. Trucks from our Harrisburg Pike yard reach Merion Village in 20–40 minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Which way does a tow truck come into Merion Village?

From our Harrisburg Pike yard, just inside I-270 on the southwest side, the driver heads north on I-71. For addresses near the south end of the neighborhood the truck leaves at exit 104, SR-104 and Frank Road; for blocks closer to German Village it uses exit 105 at Greenlawn Avenue, which runs east to South High Street. From High, the side streets fan east toward South Fourth Street and Parsons Avenue. Give dispatch the cross street nearest your car and the driver will pick the exit that saves the most time.

I live south of Thurman Avenue. Is that German Village or Merion Village, and does it matter for a tow?

South of Thurman Avenue and Whittier Street you are generally in Merion Village, which the association extends down to Frank Road and the alley below Morrill Avenue. For a tow, the name matters less than the exact address, since the blocks on either side of the line look alike and a driver works from the house number. If you already live north of that line, our German Village page covers the brick streets there. Either way, the same dispatch line and the same truck handle the call.

What if my car quits on I-71 between Frank Road and Greenlawn Avenue?

That stretch runs along the neighborhood's western side with on-ramps close together, so get onto the right shoulder or take the next ramp if the car still rolls. Put the flashers on and stay buckled in, and call 911 first if you are stopped in a live lane. When you reach our dispatcher, say northbound or southbound and whether the last sign you passed was for Frank Road or for Greenlawn Avenue. That tells the driver which side of the freeway to approach from and saves a loop through the interchange.

A stranger's car is parked across my Merion Village driveway. Will you tow it away?

Not from a public street. A car parked on a city street or alley can only be removed on the order of the Columbus Division of Police, so the right call is their non-emergency number, and an officer decides whether it gets towed. Private parking is different. The owner of a business lot or apartment lot that posts the signs Ohio law requires may have unauthorized cars removed, and we do that work as private-property towing, with a record kept of every vehicle we take.

My tire went flat while I was parked on South High Street. Can you change it there?

Usually, yes. If the car is at the curb with enough room to work on the traffic side, the driver can mount your spare during a tire change and have you moving again, checking the spare's pressure first. When the spare is missing or flat too, or the wheel lock key cannot be found, we load the car and take it to a tire shop instead. Tell dispatch which side of High Street you are on and the nearest cross street, because parked cars and bus stops decide where the truck can pull in.

Where can my car go after a tow out of Merion Village, and what is the price?

You pick the destination: your own mechanic, a dealership, a tire shop, one of our partner repair shops, or back to your house on the south side. If you have not chosen a shop yet, we can hold the car at our Harrisburg Pike lot for a daily storage fee and deliver it once you decide. The dispatcher works out the charge from our rate card and reads it to you before the truck is hooked up, and you can settle by card or cash once the car is dropped off.
